At the turn of the 19th century, the SS Kakapo ran around on Noordhoek Beach, south of Cape Town. She was an iron framed ship and settled on the beach. Over the past century or so, the seas have slowly claimed her as their own.
Winter storms bury and dig her up, wearing and tearing at her skeleton and form. And slowly nature is reclaiming the Iron and Steel that man took from the earth, that man created in to a ship, slowly dissolving her back into the sea.
In the winter of 2008, I was doing a shoot in Kommetjie and had a couple of hours off before I had to return to shoot the sunset at property, so it was a chance encounter with more of the ship than had been seen for many years. The storm a few days before had taken over 1.2m / 4ft off the huge beach that is Noordhoek beach and revealed so much that was hidden.
